CodeWalker not loading: startup, black screen and missing world

Diagnose CodeWalker startup errors, a black viewport and a missing GTA V world with staged checks for extraction, game paths, graphics and build compatibility.

A documented next step and a repeatable verification procedure.

Before you startA backup of your source project

Start by identifying what fails to load. A process that never opens, a visible window with a black viewport, a missing world and a missing custom map are different failures. Reinstalling every tool at once removes the evidence that could distinguish them.

Keep your project files, game archives and existing configuration backed up. Use a separate folder for a clean CodeWalker extraction. The goal is to isolate application startup from game-data loading and then from your own project, not to overwrite a working installation.

CodeWalker does not open at all

Extract the full author-distributed archive into a local folder before launching the executable. Do not run it inside an archive viewer or copy only the executable away from its accompanying files. Record the exact error text and whether Windows reports a missing runtime, a blocked file or an application crash.

Check the requirements for that release using the original download sources. The author’s README describes a Windows x64 application using .NET Framework and DirectX; a modern runtime with a similar name is not necessarily the dependency requested by an older build. Install prerequisites from their original publishers rather than a DLL-download site.

If Windows blocks the package, verify the source and inspect the warning. Do not disable antivirus, add broad exclusions or run unknown repacks as administrator as a generic repair. A security warning and a renderer crash require different decisions.

Separate the launcher from world loading

The CodeWalker README documents command-line modes that are useful for isolating a failure. In a terminal opened in the extracted application directory, try these separately:

CodeWalker.exe menu
CodeWalker.exe explorer

The menu and RPF Explorer paths help distinguish the application shell/archive browser from the full World view. Record whether each opens; do not keep several heavy world-loading instances running while comparing results. These are diagnostic modes, not a promise to repair an incompatible game build.

If neither starts, investigate the application/runtime failure first. If the archive browser opens but World fails, preserve that distinction for the next graphics or data-loading check. If your build exposes different launch options, follow its own README instead of forcing an assumed command.

The window opens but the viewport is black

Watch for loading progress and an actual error before treating an empty first frame as a failure. Test the unmodified world without your custom project. A saved camera position, hidden layers or a failing custom asset can make a working application appear empty.

Check that the active graphics adapter and driver support the renderer requirements of your chosen release. Record the GPU, driver and whether you are using remote desktop or a virtual machine. Those environments can behave differently from a local accelerated desktop; a successful file-browser window does not prove that the 3D renderer is available.

Try a known, visible area in World view and reset your view using the documented controls. The navigation guide separates camera navigation from entity editing. Do not change registry values or copy graphics DLLs into the application folder without a specific, verified diagnosis.

The GTA V world or DLC assets are missing

Confirm the selected folder is the intended GTA V installation, not a FiveM cache directory, launcher shortcut or the other GTA edition. Record the game edition and build alongside the CodeWalker build. An older executable and a newer archive set can be a compatibility question, not a corrupt project.

Check that the game installation is complete and readable by the current user. Use your game launcher’s verification procedure when you have evidence of missing or damaged game files; keep modded work separate so repair does not destroy your only copy. Do not download individual RPF archives from unofficial sources.

If only certain DLC objects are absent, compare their availability with the loaded DLC/build context. Do not infer that every other asset is broken because one archetype fails. See finding prop names and dependencies.

CodeWalker works until a project is opened

Create a fresh project and add one known map file. Then introduce your changed files one at a time. If the failure begins after one addition, keep both the last working project and the smallest failing example. Check whether the file is native data or XML and whether its edition matches.

A missing custom interior with an otherwise functioning world belongs in MLO and YMAP troubleshooting. That guide checks placement, YTYP registration, rooms, portals and collision rather than treating every content issue as an application-installation problem.

Make a useful support report

Include the CodeWalker build, download source, Windows version, GPU/driver, game edition/build, launch mode, exact error and smallest reproducible sequence. State whether a clean project and the unmodified world work. Remove personal paths and never attach your whole game installation or confidential project by default.

Use the author’s support links from the download page. Preserve logs and screenshots of actual errors; “black screen” without the stage and environment is too broad to identify a reliable fix.

Check your work.
